Originally the area that we know as Palm Beach County was the northern portion of Dade County.
Dade County was eventually split into three parts forming Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties.

Because Palm Beach County has a long coastline, and because Henry Flagler was intent on
developing the coast from St. Augustine to Havana, Palm Beach County has a considerable amount
of history from the late 1900's.  The most prominent areas in Palm Beach County which are historic
(and have such designations) are West Palm Beach, Delray and Boca Raton.  There are a few
historic locations in other areas:  Jupiter, Boynton Beach and Yesteryear Village at the South Florida
Fair Grounds.

Other than Palm Beach and West Palm Beach, the next area most associated with Henry Flagler and
Addison Mizner (the premier architect of the time) was Old Floresta in Boca Raton.

Historic Societies and Places of Interest

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County is the main organization to keep archives and present
programs pertaining to the history of this county.  The main fund-raising event of their year is the
January annual Palm Beach Winter Antiques Show.  In addition to this event, they sponsor lecture
series; partner with the School District of Palm Beach County, The Palm Beach Post and
WPBF-YV to develop a Florida History curriculum for 4th grade students; sponsor an annual
Antique Row Walk in February; sponsor a lecture series; and sponsor a popular Downtown West
Palm Beach History Stroll series.  For more information in this group and their programs, visit their
web site at

The local arm of the Florida Department of State is located in Delray Beach and is run by Bonnie
Dearborn. She serves a number of counties in aiding their historic efforts whether it be information,
shepherding of projects through a state process, or giving talks to various organizations.  She can be
